David Unger: Homage to the Strong Woman/Joy

The first in a series of four shows titled Homage to the Strong Woman. Over fifty sculptures will be available for purchase, and most of those images reflect the joy of women.

Merriam-Webster defines joy: “1. a. the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires.” Kathryn Unger is the spouse, mother and business manager who ensures the good fortune of David Unger and the Unger family. Beginning with Miriam, the good fortunes of the Jewish culture have been safeguarded and promulgated by strong women, and Kathryn Unger typifies this prophetic strength.

The feature sculpture in this first event will be Joy of Life, life-size at 66” long, 29” wide and 37” high. This beautiful piece presents the figure of a woman devoid of sensualistic metaphors and imbued with the presence of a woman that faces her existence with exuberance.

David Unger began his sculptural formal training at 11 years of age with the renowned Chaim Gross. His sculptures have been called “reminiscent of the works of the English modernist Henry Moore” by Dorothy Shinn of the Akron Beacon Journal. It might seem that the kinetic motion and expressive simplicity of David Unger’s figures is quiescently reminiscent of the German Bauhaus sculptor Gerhard Marcks. Steven Jobs inspired incorporation of the ideals of Bauhaus into the architecture of Apple Computer, which has brought this aesthetic movement back to the fore. The sculptures of David Unger are centered on the Bauhaus aesthetic.

Arlene Ladell Hayes: Pay Day at the CircusLadell was a West Texas hippie in the 60s who is still an unpretentious artist though her collectors are many and include presidents of universities and companies, including Father Biondi of St. Louis University and a couple of local leaders of corporate entities; movie stars, including an Academy Award winner; TV personalities as disparate as Imus and Sam Donaldson; sports heroes; and a lot of unknown admirers like Bill and Susanna Hester and a collector in Boston who has more than 100 pieces.

Ladell is always searching for good kharma, and she searches in oils, pastels, watercolors, encaustics, ceramics, bronzes and photography.

For some good kharma, join us for PAY DAY AT THE CIRCUS on Saturday, March 20, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., at

2008-09

Bill Dunlap at Bill Hester Fine Art
Thursday, October 30, 2008
4 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Bill Dunlap, whose paintings have been revered by North Carolinians for years, comes to Bill Hester Fine Art in downtown Chapel Hill. Mr. Dunlap is collected by museums, corporations and individuals throughout the world. His work hangs in many public places in North Carolina including the Kenan Center on the UNC, Chapel Hill campus, where he has three large canvases on view constantly.

Landscape and Variable: Down Wind Doric Dogs by Bill DunlapThe paintings of Bill Dunlap are both classical and modern. His new painting titled, “Landscape and Variable: Down Wind Doric Dogs” contains the accidents of hyperreality in a composition of classical proportions.

If I may borrow from Jorge Luis Borges: Bill Dunlap has set out to portray his world which began with the fox dogs of his childhood and is leaving compositions of “our times (that) will intermingle and chronology will be lost in a sphere of symbols.” We, like Bill Dunlap’s Dogs and Borges, will dream and daydream our history.

Bill Dunlap will be at the gallery on October 30th between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Bill Hester Fine Art is located at 143F West Franklin Street on the back side of University Square.
